Awards of Merit for Excellence in Interprofessional Education

 

The Centre for Advancing Collaborative Healthcare & Education (CACHE) has established annual Awards of Merit for Excellence in Interprofessional Education in the following four categories:

  • Ivy Oandasan Leadership Award Award of Merit for Outstanding Role Modeling of Interprofessional Collaboration for Patient-Centred Care to Learners
  • Award of Merit for Excellence - Interprofessional Education Teaching (individual or team)

  • Award of Merit for Outstanding Role Modeling of Interprofessional Collaboration for Patient-Centred Care to Learners

  • Susan J. Wagner Student Leadership Award in Interprofessional Education

Annually the Centre for Collaborative Healthcare & Education awards educators, preceptors, leaders, students, etc. who have demonstrated dedication and engagement in interprofessional collaboration, education and practice. These awards not only celebrate the outstanding achievements of these dedicated professionals but also recognizes their unwavering commitment to advancing interprofessional collaboration in health & social care and education. Their exceptional contributions have undoubtedly transformed the landscape of healthcare education, paving the way for a brighter and more integrated future. 

Eligibility:
For categories 1, 2, and 3, leaders/educators/clinicians affiliated with the University of Toronto (UT) who have had interprofessional education (IPE) teaching or supervisory responsibilities directly with UT students are eligible.

For category 4, University of Toronto students in the Health Sciences and Social Care Programs who are graduating in the spring or fall of the award year (2024 and 2025) are eligible.

Previous nominees that have not won an award remain eligible to apply.
Previous winners of an award are not eligible to apply for the same award.

Award Categories:

1. Award of Merit for Excellence in Interprofessional Education Teaching (Individual or Team)

This award is for excellence in IPE teaching over a two-year period.

Recipient: Individual or Team

Criteria:

  • Demonstrates enthusiasm, commitment and knowledge of interprofessional education.
  • Demonstrates mentorship and role modelling of interprofessional collaboration. Demonstrates the ability to:
    • Enhance learning
    • Develop, teach and/or deliver effective educational programs
    • Use innovative teaching methods
    • Stimulate critical thinking

Nomination Materials Required:

  • Nomination Form
  • 1 Letter of Nomination - highlight how the candidate meets the criteria of the award
  • 1-2 Peer Letters of Support - highlight the impact of teaching on the learner (500 words or less)
  • IPE-specific Teaching Dossier Summary (for the last 2 years)
  • Summary of evaluations of IPE teaching performance highlighting impact of teaching on learners (Quantitative or qualitative, 2-3 pages max.)

Supporting Documentation may also include:

  • Course/Program syllabus
  • Abstract of lecture(s)

2. Ivy Oandasan Leadership Award for Outstanding Leadership in Advancing Interprofessional Education

This award honours excellence in interprofessional education. It recognizes a leader either community-based, hospital-based or university-based whose unique and innovative contribution has had a significant impact on interprofessional education at the University of Toronto.

Recipient: Individual

Criteria:

  • Demonstrates leadership qualities in the domains of visionary and inspirational leadership, engaging stakeholders, scholarship, administration and sustainability of their contribution to interprofessional education.
  • Promotes interprofessional education and inspires others to lead.
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm, commitment, and knowledge of interprofessional education.
  • Advances research in interprofessional education and interprofessional care.

Nomination Materials Required:

  • Nomination Form
  • 1 Letter of Nomination - highlight how the candidate meets the criteria of the award
  • Candidate Statement - highlight contributions to interprofessional education at the University of Toronto (max 500 words)
  • CV (Max. 5 page summary)
  • IPE-specific Teaching Dossier Summary - provide evidence of exemplary scholarship
  • 3-4 Letters of Support - describe the nominee's contributions and impact

3. Award of Merit for an Outstanding Team that Role Models Interprofessional Collaboration for Patient-Centred Care to Learners

This award honours an outstanding health-care team that demonstrates collaboration among different health-care professionals to support excellence in the delivery of patient-centred care. It is given to an established team that is recognized for its ability to role model and teaches the competencies necessary for health professionals to practice collaboration. Learners can be defined as those at any time along the professional career trajectory i.e. pre-entry to practice, graduate-level, etc.

Recipient: Individual

Criteria:

  • Demonstrates mentorship and role modeling of interprofessional collaboration.
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm, commitment and knowledge of interprofessional education.
  • Demonstrates the ability to:
    • Enhance learning
    • Develop, teach and/or deliver effective educational programs
    • Use innovative teaching methods
    • Stimulate critical thinking

Nomination Materials Required:

  • Nomination Form
  • 1 Letter of Nomination - highlight how the candidate meets the criteria of the award
  • 1-2 Learner Letters of Support - outline impact of experience with the healthcare team describing the team's contributions towards interprofessional collaborative patient-centred care and how they are able to demonstrate and teach this type of care to learners (500 words or less)
  • 1-2 Peer Letters of Support: Hospital or Education Administrators highlight how the team meets the criteria of the award (500 words or less)
  • Summary of evaluations of IPE teaching performance highlighting impact of teaching on learners (Quantitative or qualitative, 2-3 pages max.)
  • (Optional) 1-2 Written Patient Testimonial with obtained consent

4. Susan J. Wagner Award for Student Leadership in Interprofessional Education

This award honours a student at the University of Toronto who demonstrates leadership, dedication and excellence through promotion and engagement of interprofessional education and care. Students in the 11 Health Sciences and Social Care programs (Dentistry, Medicine, Medical Radiation Sciences, Nursing, Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Physical Education & Kinesiology, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Social Work, Speech Language Pathology) who are graduating n the spring or fall of the award year (2024 and 2025) are eligible.

Recipient: Individual

Criteria:

  • Completion of the four foundational learning activities and a minimum of two elective learning activities of the University of Toronto IPE curriculum program.
  • Demonstrates leadership, enthusiasm and engagement promoting interprofessional education (e.g. implementing an IPE elective learning activity, participation in an IPE committee, IPE working group, community outreach).
  • Demonstrates interprofessional mentorship and role modeling (e.g. facilitation of an interprofessional learning activity).

Nomination Materials Required:

  • Nomination Form
  • 1 Faculty Letter of Nomination - highlight how the candidate meets the criteria of the award
  • Candidate Statement - highlight the importance of IPE in their student experiences (e.g. clinical practice); how the IPE curriculum enabled their learning; and their involvement in leading IPE/IPC (max. 500 words)
  • 1-3 Peer/Faculty Letters of Support - highlight how the candidate meets the criteria of the award (max. 500 words)

  • Award Process Opens in September 2024
  • Nomination Applications due in early March 2025
  • Award Winners Selected in early April 2025
  • Awards Presented at CACHE Event in late April 2025 and Temerty Education Achievement Awards in May 2025
