The University of Toronto in collaboration with Scarborough Health Network, Michael Garron Hospital, and Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities, is delighted to announce that students are now able to apply for a new community-based interprofessional education (IPE) elective opportunity, SAMIH Incubator IPE Certificate Program!
This certificate programwill help redefine collaborative leadership in the context of innovations in healthcare, education, and practice.This 12-week certificate program will launch in Scarborough and East York in January 2027, with a small interprofessional cohort. Learners will work in solidarity with health and social care professionals, community partners, and patient/family/caregiver partners to address key gaps across the continuum of care, while growing skills in collaborative leadership, empathy, self-reflection, moral and spiritual resilience, and interprofessional competencies.
Learning Objectives
Demonstrate empathic and generative listening by suspending their own preconceptions and judgments (assumptions) to fully embrace the viewpoints (experience and perspectives) of others, aiming to co-create new understanding.
Work in solidarity with system voices to co-create localized solutions that address critical gaps in care/service by cultivating self and system awareness.
Develop the capacity to practice (and embody) compassion (and/or empathy) for self and others, thereby building emotional, psychological, moral and spiritual resiliency which are known to contribute positively to patient safety and outcomes.

Application/Participation Criteria
1. This elective opportunity is open to all upper year health professions learners ( Year 2 or above). However, learners from/with a connection to Scarborough/East York (as expressed on the application form) will be prioritized.
2. Applicants must be available for the full 12-week duration of the SAMIH Incubator IPE Certificate Program (January 11th- April 2nd, 2027).
3. Participants are expected to attend weekly check-ins, as well as any synchronous sessions (virtual and in-person in Scarborough/East York). This may include some evenings.
4. The SAMIH Incubator IPE Certificate Program will include asynchronous work between sessions, to be coordinated/completed by the learners.
Upon completion of all requirements, learners will receive a certificate of completion and two IPE Elective Recognitions at the Immersion Level. This is part of the IPE offerings at the Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health (SAMIH).
